What is Gold Filled? (vs. gold plated and solid gold)
Gold filled is made up of a layer of solid gold bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal such as brass. It is also legally required to contain 5% gold and provide a more lasting shine. This ring is made with 14k gold filled (14/20)
Gold plating on the other hand, does not compose any measurable proportion of the products total weight. It is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating will generally wear off rather quickly and expose the brass base product. It does not stand up to heat, water or wear over time.
Solid gold is an alloy that is described with the karatage of pure gold. Pure gold is 24kt. However, it is much too soft to hold its shape or wear well. Therefore, it is mixed or alloyed with other metals to make it harder and easier to work with. Karatage refers to the alloy’s purity. For example, 10 karat gold is 10/24 pure gold or 41. 7% pure.
Gold filled won't peel or tarnish. You can clean it with mild soap and water.
Tourmaline stones
Tourmaline gemstone is a semi-precious mineral similar to granite. With colors ranging from magenta to teal-blue, meadow-green to vibrant yellow, and even black, tourmaline gets its name from the Singhalese phrase “tura mali,” which means, “stone mixed with vibrant colors.”
Tourmaline emits far infrared radiation in the 4-14 micron wavelength. Electromagnetic radiation in the far infrared range is able to boost the immune system and promote detoxification.
